DOCUMENTING TOUCH

The touch device started off as way to connect the physical feeling of touch and the visual interpretation of a specific location or object. In the end this lead me to develop a painting style that was inspired by the drawings made from this device. The initial plan was to use the drawings and reproduce them as paintings however the drawings are actually really effective as they are. In the end I find them more useful to surround myself with them whilst I paint.

Digital sketches (see other plans and developments for device in sketchbook).

Testing out the first cardboard prototype (final one to be laser cut from ply wood and finger attachments made more secure and comfortable).

  • The drawings are subtly different to one another.

  • Jill Gibbon gave me the idea to use my handmade gall ink in a brush pen next time.

  • Initially had named each drawing however Jill advised me they were much better left to the imagination- I dont need to label them.

  • Jill also gave me the idea to use concertina folded paper so that it can be displayed as one.

  • You can see the perfected device in the video below; the finger loops are made of elastic so that they hold secure and dont slip off and the board has been laser cut in flexible ply wood.

  • As this drawing device inspired my paintings, I used it to record the sense of touch as I scavenged the river side in Burton in Lonsdale for the mud rocks.

  • The drawings made by this touch device influence my painting decisions and compositions.

  • I still have lots to explore with this device however I am wanting to keep it a little separate from my painting practice as they have moved apart onto different directions.
